Maybe you’re new to Reformer Pilates in Brisbane. Or perhaps you’ve recently moved to Brisbane and are on the hunt for the best Pilates studio available?

But you’re unsure where to start. There’s plenty of spots to get a Pilates fix in Brisbane, but how can you be sure you’re making the right choice?

At Reform Studios, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few aspects you should consider when picking your spot for Mat or Reformer Pilates in Brisbane.

1. The Instructors Are Qualified and Knowledgeable

The instructor leading your Pilates class should have a training background in Pilates. Basically, you’ll want to check up and ensure that the instructors have their Pilates Mat and/or Reformer certification and are specialised in Pilates – not just general fitness or other modalities such as yoga.

Don’t be shy about asking questions regarding each studio’s instructors. If they’re certified, they’ll be happy to chat. Further, you should feel comfortable around your instructor. An ideal instructor is welcoming, warm, kind, and helpful. They should also create a safe space where you feel you can ask for help or options if needed. At Reform Studios we’re all about building a community of engaged locals, young and old.

2. It’s All About Location!

You don’t want to have to travel across town for your Pilates class every day. When looking for a studio offering Mat or Reformer Pilates in Brisbane, double-check the neighbourhood. Is it close by to where you live? Is it easy to get to after work? Is it near the train or do they have ample parking? How will it fit into your lifestyle and your schedule?

Hint: Google Maps is an excellent tool to use to determine if the location of a Pilates studio is ideal for you or not.

3. The Studio Offers a Wide Range of Classes

Check the schedule of each studio. Do they have class times that work for you and your life? If you are more of a night owl but only morning classes are available, it’s probably a good idea to go with a different studio. The last thing you want to do is spend money on something you won’t ever be able to attend.

You should further check to see what kind of Pilates they offer. Both Mat and Reformer Pilates have different benefits, and it may prove beneficial to join a studio that offers both. At least then you have the option – especially when you want to mix up your regular routine.

4. The Environment is Welcoming and Friendly

You should feel welcomed and comfortable, no intimidated and anxious. The staff at the front desk should be ready to help you out when you need it, including answering your questions about what to expect and any concerns you may have. Your instructors should also come across as open, friendly, and flexible – willing to work to your needs – not just drill you like an army sergeant. This is your workout. And you deserve a safe space every time.

5. A Physio Should Ensure Your Safety is Put First

Many studios work closely with, or even have a physiotherapist on hand to help out (we do)! Physios can offer exercise options and advice on how your workout can best be tailored to suit your individual circumstances. This, in turn, lowers your risk of injury and pain. They may also help in the case where a member does experience an injury. It’s rare, but injuries happen to all of us. The best thing you can do is learn and grow from it – as well as be patient throughout your recovery. If you studio doesn’t offer Physio services, or at least encourage you to obtain guidance from your own Physio, they may just be more interested in your wallet than your well-being. Beware!

6. It’s Fun!

Exercise is tough enough. You shouldn’t feel like time is dragging. Or like you’re bored out of your mind. Exercise should be fun! And that’s exactly what Pilates is all about. Each class should challenge you. Your instructor should mix it up. It comes back to the environment and atmosphere. The instructor should make you feel comfortable and promote a positive, happy, and fun environment you want to be a part of.

7. The Studio Has Flexible Pricing and Membership Options

Can you buy short memberships? Annual memberships? What about paying per class? Can you purchase different types of classes in combination? Everyone is different, and depending on your lifestyle, physical condition and how often you can attend Pilates, your membership needs will probably be totally different to your neighbour. A great studio will have a range of pricing and membership options. If they don’t have one to suit you, they should be willing to customise one that does the job. And if you don’t know what you need they should be able to help you select the right option for you and your life.
